For bulk SMS in Nigeria, alphanumeric sender IDs should be registered with each mobile network (MTN, Airtel, Glo and T2, formerly 9mobile) before use, and numeric senders usually fail on international routes. Promotional SMS is filtered for subscribers on the 2442 Do Not Disturb (DND) service and should only be sent between 08:00 and 20:00 local time, while OTP and transactional traffic needs a route classified as transactional.
Rules last checked: October 2026.
Sender ID registration
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) regulates A2P messaging, and the operators approve sender IDs network by network, usually through your SMS provider. Providers quote about three to five business days locally and two to three weeks for international registrations as of 2026. Expect to provide company details, the sender ID, sample messages and the traffic type. Use a sender ID that matches your brand: generic IDs such as INFO, Verify or Notify, and IDs that use another company's brand, are filtered or blocked. The general process is described in sender ID registration.
In July 2025 the NCC opened a licence for international A2P messaging aggregators, the first formal framework for international A2P traffic into Nigeria. It applies to companies that aggregate and terminate international traffic, not to brands, but it is part of a push against grey routes and spam, so check that your route provider's traffic reaches the networks legitimately.
Sender ID types and replacement
| Sender type | What to expect (as of 2026) |
|---|---|
| Registered alphanumeric | Recommended; up to 11 characters, sender preserved |
| Unregistered alphanumeric | Best effort only; may be replaced or blocked depending on the route |
| Numeric (international) | Fails on MTN, Airtel and T2 according to providers |
| Short codes, two-way SMS | Not supported on international A2P routes |
See SMS sender ID types for the differences between the formats.
DND 2442 and promotional rules
Since 2016, an NCC direction has required operators to run the 2442 short code. Subscribers who text STOP to 2442 activate full DND and stop receiving promotional messages; partial DND lets them block only selected categories, such as banking or entertainment. In practice:
- promotional messages are not delivered to DND numbers on standard routes;
- transactional messages (OTP, account alerts, payment and order notices) can reach DND numbers when sent on routes classified as transactional;
- operator filtering is aggressive, so even service messages can be caught by DND filtering on the wrong route;
- promotional messages to subscribers who have not opted out may only be sent between 08:00 and 20:00.
Adding a promotional line to an OTP or alert can get the traffic reclassified and dropped. Transactional vs promotional SMS explains how to keep the two apart.
Content and consent
Get opt-in consent before marketing; the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 applies to anyone processing the personal data of people in Nigeria. Providers prohibit gambling, adult content, loans, political and religious content, alcohol and controlled substances on most routes. More detail in SMS content restrictions. English text fits GSM-7; Unicode is supported on alphanumeric senders but shortens each segment.
Mobile networks and OTP traffic
The mobile operators are MTN, Airtel, Glo and T2 (9mobile rebranded as T2 in 2025). For OTP, use a registered alphanumeric sender on a transactional route, keep the text free of offers, and confirm delivery on each network, including to DND numbers, before launch. Fast "delivered" reports with no real receipt are a warning sign of fake DLR. Rate-limit OTP requests to protect your account from SMS pumping, and read our OTP SMS best practices.
VoIPMatcher sources A2P SMS routes from its carriers and manages them, and buyers and sellers never see each other. Tell us your sender ID, traffic type and whether you need delivery to DND numbers. See the Nigeria SMS destination page or request a Nigeria SMS route.
Frequently asked questions
What is the DND code for MTN Nigeria?
Subscribers on MTN and the other Nigerian networks text STOP to 2442 to activate full Do Not Disturb, which stops promotional messages. Partial DND lets them block only selected categories, such as banking or entertainment. An NCC direction has required operators to run the 2442 service since 2016. Transactional routes can still reach DND numbers.
Can OTP SMS reach DND numbers in Nigeria?
Yes, when they are sent on a route classified as transactional. Promotional messages are not delivered to DND numbers on standard routes. Operator filtering is aggressive, though, so even service messages can be caught on the wrong route, and adding a promotional line to an OTP can get the traffic reclassified and dropped. Test DND delivery before launch.
How much does bulk SMS cost in Nigeria?
Prices depend on the route type, the network, whether the traffic is OTP, transactional or promotional and whether the route must deliver to DND numbers. Very cheap offers often mean grey routes, where messages are reported as delivered but never arrive. Ask for a price per network and compare the cost per delivered message after a test.
Can I use a numeric sender ID in Nigeria?
Not reliably. Providers report that international numeric senders fail on MTN, Airtel and T2, and short codes and two-way SMS are not supported on international A2P routes. Use a registered alphanumeric sender ID of up to 11 characters that matches your brand; generic IDs such as INFO, Verify or Notify are filtered or blocked.
