Egyptian operators filter A2P SMS heavily, so whichever SMS gateway you use in Egypt, a pre-registered alphanumeric sender ID is the reliable way to deliver. As of 2026, registration is mandatory for local (domestic) traffic and strongly recommended for international traffic, Arabic-script sender IDs are not allowed, and marketing messages face a night curfew and weekend restrictions.
Rules last checked: October 2026.
Sender ID registration
Telecoms in Egypt are regulated by the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), and SMS senders are expected to follow NTRA rules on sender IDs, consent and promotional hours. Operators apply them per network. Provider guides describe two cases:
| Traffic | Registration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic (local company, local route) | Required on all networks | Company registration and tax card documents needed; providers quote around 3 weeks |
| International | Not always mandatory, strongly recommended | Unregistered or dynamic senders may be blocked or replaced with a generic sender |
Providers also keep local and international traffic on separate connections, so declare honestly which one you are. Registration is done by your SMS provider and usually needs a sender ID of 3 to 11 characters, a signed letter of authorization, company details, sample messages and the use case. Arabic-language sender IDs and special characters are rejected, so use simple Latin letters and digits. See how sender ID registration works.
Sender ID types and replacement
Alphanumeric sender IDs are the standard. Domestic long codes are not supported for A2P, and short codes are local services allocated separately. Messages sent from international long codes towards Etisalat are delivered with a generic alphanumeric sender, and other unregistered senders may be overwritten with a generic name or number. Orange Egypt blocks a list of sender IDs that are often abused, including names such as FACEBOOK, GOOGLE, META, MICROSOFT, NOTICE and generic OTP names like VerifyOTP or CloudOTP. Choose a sender that is clearly your brand. More in SMS sender ID types.
Content, opt-in and sending hours
- Get opt-in consent before sending and offer a free way to opt out of marketing.
- Marketing campaigns are restricted between 21:00 and 09:00 local time, and providers advise no marketing on Fridays, Saturdays or official holidays.
- Transactional messages can be sent when needed, but keep their content strictly transactional: see transactional vs promotional SMS.
- Gambling, political, religious, adult, alcohol, tobacco and medicine or drug related content is prohibited.
Our guide to SMS content restrictions covers how operators enforce these categories.
Mobile networks and delivery
Egypt has four mobile operators: Vodafone Egypt (the largest), Orange Egypt, Etisalat by e& and WE, the mobile brand of Telecom Egypt. Delivery reports for domestic registered traffic can arrive late on some routes without affecting delivery, and on concatenated domestic messages only the first part may get a report. Do not judge a route on report timing alone; see SMS delivery rate and latency and how to detect fake DLRs. Arabic message text needs Unicode, which limits a single SMS to 70 characters (GSM-7 vs Unicode encoding).
OTP traffic
- Register a brand sender ID; generic OTP sender names are on operator block lists.
- Include your brand or service name in the message text. Providers have seen generic OTP texts rejected, especially on Etisalat.
- Keep the code in Latin characters so it stays in one GSM-7 segment.
- Test each of the four networks before launch: how to test an SMS route. Then follow the OTP SMS best practices.

Getting a route
Rules in Egypt vary by operator and by local or international traffic, so confirm registration and sending windows with the route provider before launch. VoIPMatcher sources the route from its carriers and manages it; buyers and sellers never see each other. Share your sender ID, traffic type and volumes and request an Egypt SMS route.
Frequently asked questions
Is sender ID registration mandatory in Egypt?
For domestic traffic from a local company, yes, on all networks, with company registration and tax card documents; providers quote around three weeks. For international traffic it is not always mandatory but strongly recommended, because unregistered or dynamic senders may be blocked or replaced with a generic sender. Declare honestly whether your traffic is local or international.
Can I use an Arabic sender ID in Egypt?
No. Arabic-language sender IDs and special characters are rejected, so register a sender of 3 to 11 simple Latin letters and digits that clearly shows your brand. The message text itself can be in Arabic, but Arabic needs Unicode, which limits a single SMS to 70 characters.
What time can I send marketing SMS in Egypt?
Marketing campaigns are restricted between 21:00 and 09:00 local time, and providers advise no marketing on Fridays, Saturdays or official holidays. Transactional messages such as OTPs can be sent when needed, provided their content is strictly transactional. Opt-in consent and a free opt-out are expected for marketing.
Why are OTP messages blocked in Egypt?
Common causes are generic sender names such as VerifyOTP or CloudOTP, which Orange Egypt blocks, and generic OTP texts without the brand name, which providers have seen rejected, especially on Etisalat. Register a brand sender ID, put your brand or service name in the text and test each of the four networks.
